- El Morro (p. 34)-16th century fortress located in San Juan, Puerto Rico-designed to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay and defend the Spanish city from enemies; one of Puerto Rico’s most popular touristic attractions
- Fairmount Park (p. 35)-more than 9,200 acres of
- Adjunct professor (p. 41)-someone hired by a university to teach, but isn’t a full member of the faculty; does not receive full salary and/or benefit compensation
- Sonrisa- (p. 42) a smile
- Kushiro River (p. 44)-a river in Hokkaido, Japan that empties into the Pacific Ocean
- Pasteles (p. 55)-Puerto Rican style tamales normally prepared for the Christmas season
- Coqui (p. 59)-common name for several species of frogs that are endemic to Puerto Rico
- Fuacata (p. 60)-onomatopeia for a hitting sound
