For Hudes, music is an essential part of the Eliot trilogy and each play centers around music, Bach, Puerto Rican folksongs, and, for Water by the Spoonful, jazz--in particular Coltrane.
"Coltrane sprung to mind. In "A Love Supreme" there is both exquisite control and yet a letting go in his playing [. . . ] that mixture of control and freedom felt akin to the journey my characters would need to take in order to achieve true recovery.
As I researched online chat rooms for recovering addicts, I found the language people used to be thrilling and virtuosic. It reminded me of jazz solos. And so you will see in the play, there are monologues (solos) from characters, punctuated by bursts of crazy fervent conversation (trading fours, ensemble, etc.
I listened to Coltrane the entire time I wrote this play." (Hudes, from an interview with Kyle Frisina, Second Stage Newsletter, 2012)
