Scenic Design | Becca Smith
"The scenic design for this show was inspired by the forms that water can take. The platforms are round and painted to mimic the effect of water dripping into pools to create the organic play space for the actors. This is juxtaposed with the digital world, where the characters lead a significant portion of their lives. The set features this contrast between the two worlds and how they are separate but mingle together in the lives of our cast. A piece of research I was drawn to was the art installation Particle Falls by Andera Polli (2008). This art piece created a visual representation of the pollution in the air by projecting a digital waterfall that changes with the pollution in the air. I really connected to the visual imagery of the digital world connecting to the real world in the waterfall and wanted to bring this to our production."

"When I began looking for inspiration for the costumes, I was particularly drawn to these images. They all speak to different themes of the play as well as provide a very intriguing visual composition. The image of the tiger underwater was the first piece of inspiration I found. I was drawn to the color contrast within the image as well as the expression of the tiger. I have always related tigers with strength, so I like pulling inspiration from the struggle of the tiger in the water. For the image of the dock in the water, I enjoyed the murkiness of the image. It felt very eerie to me, and it helped me especially with exploring the character of the Ghost. The black and white photograph of the woman was particularly interesting to me. I felt that it spoke to the brokenness and conflict that each character was experiencing. I decided to use this image to influence the the color scheme of Elliot, as he was the primary example of combating feelings, since he was dealing with PTSD. I primarily used my inspirational images to influence the color scales for different characters, as well as used them for shapes and textures."

"I chose each of these images as they spoke to my vision of the ghost, the moments of Odessa's overdose, and the church scenes. I saw the ghost as being a sort of sickly, gruesome figure, which led to my choice of green for his scenes. This image is particularly striking, as there is a blurriness of the body but distinctiveness of the reaching hand." |
"Finally, I refer to this image of the stain glass windows quite often, as I feel it is a powerful image to serve as the backdrop for this very intimate and intense scene. Yaz and Elliot refer to Mami Ginny as a beautiful, powerful figure in their lives. This type of beauty ought to be reflected in the celebration of her life. She is known as a light and vibrant person, which is reflected in the colors. "
